looking for some new music? you’re in luck! in the past month, i stumbled upon a lot of good music. if you’re into electronica at all, you’ll probably enjoy these twenty songs.
orthographical aside: previously, i meticulously organized my itunes library. properly capitalizing song titles is a chore. i opted to forgo that in favor of lowercasing everything. i still keep everything in order, but it’s a lot easier not worrying about case.
unfortunately for you, this has carried over into my casual writing. english orthography doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, so i’ve (temporarily, at least) decided to lowercase everything. i understand that this can lead to even more ambiguity than is already present in english, but i’m okay with that.
The Strokes’ new album, Angles, came out a few weeks ago. I’ve been listening to this song, “Machu Picchu”, on repeat for the past week or so. On the whole, Angles feels a lot like First Impressions Of Earth in that it has a few bangin’ tracks but it kind of sucks over all.
“Primitive (The Way I Treat You)” by Ambulance LTD from LP
I love this song. I don’t love the lyrics, though.
Inevitably, I want to put it on a mix CD for a girlfriend, but don’t want a song that says “relax — don’t think about the way I treat you” on a mix CD for my girlfriend.
But I still want to include Ambulance LTD, so I go with “Stay Where You Are”, which has this line: “I might not be the one — that’s true. But I’m trying, don’t you know.”
“Artsy Remix” by ediT (featuring The Grouch) from Certified Air Raid Material
Recently, electronica music is the only thing playing on my stereo. An amazing mash-up video takes most of the responsibility for that. I saw it on Reddit recently and searched for more music by The Glitch Mob.
Naturally, after hearing great new music, I seeded a Pandora station with it. Eventually that station played “More Lazers” by ediT. I was hooked. I got ediT’s single for that song and his newest album for another, “Straight Heat”.
Turns out I took the long way around to discover ediT; he’s one of the three guys in The Glitch Mob. Anyway, you should listen to this (and the linked YouTube videos) if you like electronica.
I Didn’t Know That by The Books from The Way Out
I love The Books. I used to like Tokyo and nothing else. Then, one day, I saw lyrics for Smells Like Content on a friend of a friend’s Facebook. I found the music video and loved it immediately. The sound, the visuals, everything went together so well.
At this point, I discovered I already had them in my music library. Two albums, in fact. So I sat down and listened to The Books for a few hours. By the time I listened to all of The Lemon Of Pink and Lost And Safe, I was hooked. I couldn’t get enough of their collage (some may say aleatoric) music.
Fast forward to present day. I’m reading Reddit, as usual. A thread recommending things to buy says that The Books came out with a new album recently. What?! How did I not know? (Also, how have I not made this joke before?)
So I got the album and listened to the whole thing. This song, while not the most popular, is easily the best. Something about that beat catches my ear.
What Happened by Sublime from 40 Oz. to Freedom
I threw a party last night that turned out to be much bigger than I thought it would be. And, predictably, we ended up drinking. A lot. We ran out of beer so we started drinking Tanqueray. I woke up this afternoon wondering where my clothes and phone were.
Turns out my phone was in my clothes, which were in my bathroom and draped on the stairs. I don’t remember how they got there.
I Can Change by LCD Soundsystem from This Is Happening
I heard this song for the first time at LCD Soundsystem’s concert on Wednesday. Inexplicably, I found myself singing (drunkenly shouting) along with the chorus.
This morning I heard it again in my car and did the same thing.
Disco Science by Mirwais from Production
I first heard this song in Snatch and loved it immediately. Today, a Reddit post about hula hooping for Cirque du Soleil featured the song. (I strongly recommend you watch both Snatch and the hula video.)
I couldn’t resist any longer, I had to hunt down this song. And now, for your enjoyment, the fruits of my labor.
Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem from This Is Happening
Shannon and Mike (my sister and her husband) convinced me to get the new LCD Soundsystem album yesterday.
I bought their debut double album after I heard “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House” on Burnout Revenge and liked what I heard. Sometime later, my sister played “North American Scum” for me. I liked it, so I got their second album.
That’s about all I know about LCD Soundsystem.
Into The Shadows Of My Embrace by Why? from Eskimo Snow
I posted this song for this lyric alone: “I wish I could feel close to somebody, but I don’t feel nothing.” But I looked up the lyrics, and this one jumped out at me: “Ya gotta yell something out you’d never tell nobody.”
I missed my therapy appointment this morning, so I listened to Why? and The Books all day.
Coincide by Pet Hospital from Dry Bones
I’ll never let you know about my frequent cries…
