Helicopter blades generate lightning bolts

A collection of sublime images from embedded journalist Michael Yon of what happens when helicopters fly through dust storms. Lightning bolts arcing around the blades are thought to be created by static electricity arising from friction between two dissimilar materials - in this case the metal blades and the sand. Yon coined the term “Kopp-Etchells Effect”, named for two soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

After reading the comments, it appears that this is not actually lightning (which seemed unlikely in the first place) but instead stuff in the air being hit at high speed. Still looks cool.

CUT and REMOVE film cover from vegetables. CUT slit in center of pouch. SET pouch aside. MICROWAVE meal on HIGH 3 minutes.

STIR potatoes and ROTATE steak; REPLACE film cover. PLACE pouch on meal over steak. MICROWAVE an additional 3 to 4 minutes.

LET STAND 2 minutes. CAREFULLY remove as PRODUCT WILL BE HOT; STIR potatoes

CHECK that product is cooked thoroughly. Internal temperature needs to reach 165° as measured by a food thermometer.

My original post was a knee-jerk reaction to seeing a commercial that featured a song by a band I hate and already love to pick on. The commercial didn’t change my mind, I just hate Passion Pit. Honestly, I don’t give two shits about Of Montreal either.

(Anyway, I think the reblogs are all very valid.

When I say “we” in the following statements, I mean me too.)

I think the fascinating thing is that the culture of music has changed to the point where we consider it normal and perfectly acceptable to sell to commercials.Why? I can only guess it’s because we’re willing to trade our bands being in commercials for free downloads. Commercials now equal “bread and butter” because there isn’t really another way to put food on the table, unless you are Mariah Carey or Metallica.

I come from an age, not so long ago, where bands of the counter-culture represented the anti-corporate agenda. The bands I grew up rocking out to would have never considered such a commercial to be a viable option. But, they still sold 17 dollar cd’s and sold out shows.

No more of that for anyone, I guess.

Every time I see something about bands “selling out,” I have two thoughts:

What kind of band sits around saying, “Hey, let’s never get popular!”?

(I realize popularity ≠ being in a commercial.)
